Joy to the World er ikke oprindeligt skrevet som en julesang. Isaac Watts udgav teksten i 1719 i samlingen The Psalms of David Imitated, hvor han omskrev Davids salmer i et kristent sprog. Teksten er en fri gendigtning af Salme 98, og den handler egentlig ikke om Jesu fødsel i stalden, men om Kristi genkomst og herredømme. Derfor nævnes hverken krybbe, hyrder eller stjerne med et eneste ord.
Melodien, der kaldes “Antioch”, blev knyttet til teksten af den amerikanske musikpædagog Lowell Mason i 1848. Mason krediterede selv Händel, og enkelte passager minder om Messias, men musikforskere er i dag uenige om, hvor meget Händel egentlig har med sagen at gøre. Uanset ophavet blev kombinationen en enorm succes i USA, og Joy to the World regnes i dag som en af de mest udgivne og indspillede julesange i Nordamerika – sunget af alt fra kirkekor til Mariah Carey.
